Fields: Configure Profile Languages

Configure Languages lets you configure the language choices that display in Searching for a specific search profile. These language choices let users change the language in which the Searching interface is displayed.

Profiles > Configure Languages

Profiles > Configure Custom Page Elements > Configure Languages

The languages will also populate the Default Language drop-down list in the Preferences section of the Personal Information tab in each patron's account. If the user has not already been assigned a default language in Symphony, the default you choose will be selected in the list until the patron changes it. If you change the default language after patrons have selected default display languages for their accounts, their defaults will remain for their accounts.

Changing the language in Searching affects only the Searching interface. It does not change the language of the results or content in Portfolio.

You can add, remove, or reorder language choices. The languages that you choose for a search profile are displayed in Searching in that language and in the order that they appear in the Selected Language list.

When you have finished entering data on the page, choose OK to save your changes, or choose Cancel to discard your changes.

The Discovery administrator database metadata is cached in the Discovery Server application. Any changes to search profiles will not be reflected to the patron in Searching until the metadata cache is refreshed. For more information, see Refreshing the search cache.

Profile

Displays the name of the search profile for which you are configuring languages.

Available Languages

Displays a list of all the available languages on the system. Choosing a language displays that language as an option in the Languages list in Searching. If you select only one language, the Default Language drop-down list will not display in the Preferences area of the My Account interface.

You can select or multiselect one or more languages and then choose the Select button, or you can double-click individual languages to move them to the Selected Languages list.

Selected Languages

Displays a list of languages selected for this profile. The selected languages appear as options in the Languages list in Searching. The languages that you select also appear as options in Fields: Configure Custom Page Elements.

To make it easier for native speakers to select a language, in Searching each language is displayed in its native form. For example, German displays as “Deutsch.”

If more than one language variant is selected from the same language, the software will also distinguish those language variants. For example, if you select both French “(Canada, fr_CA)” and “French (France, fr_FR),” when these options display to patrons in the Languages list in Searching they appear as “français (Canada)” and “français (France)” respectively.

Note: The language options appear in Searching only if two or more are listed in the Selected Languages list. If only one language is selected in the Selected Languages list, no language options will appear in Searching.

You must select at least one language. The software will not allow you to remove all selected languages.

You can select or multiselect one or more languages and then choose the Remove button, or you can double-click individual languages to move them to the Available Languages list. Select a single language and use the arrow buttons to move it up or down in the list or make it the default language.

Note: The language designated as the default language displays in the Selected Languages list with a “++” suffix.

Note: Some languages, such as Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, for example, require special Unicode typefaces in order to display properly. If a patron’s operating system does not have appropriate Unicode-compatible fonts (such as Arial Unicode MS for Microsoft Windows systems), characters may display as question marks or boxes in the Web browser.

To add, remove, or reorder languages in the list, choose the language and then use these buttons:

Option Description

Select

Moves the selected language from the Available Languages list to the Selected Languages list.

Remove

Removes the selected language from the Selected Languages list and returns it to the Available Languages list.

Note: You cannot remove the language that is set as the default language for this search profile.

Move Up

Moves the selected language up one position in the Selected Languages list.

Move Down

Moves the selected language down one position in the Selected Languages list.

Note: These buttons are context-sensitive based on which language(s) you choose. For example, if you select a language from the Available Languages list, the Remove, Move Up, and Move Down options are disabled because those commands are not available for available languages. If you select a language from the Selected Languages list, the Remove, Move Up, and Move Down options are enabled because those commands are available for selected languages.

Set Default

Specifies the default language for a search profile.

When a patron accesses Searching, the software detects the locale setting in the patron’s Web browser. (The locale indicates a user’s language preference.) For example, if the patron’s browser is set to “fr_CA” (French Canada), the software looks to see if “French Canada” is one of the selected languages for the profile. If it is, the software automatically displays in that language. If the browser locale doesn’t match any of the selected languages, the software displays the profile using the default language that you’ve specified for the profile. The locale setting also determines the date format that is used for My Account. Enterprise uses the ISO_8601 short format for the relevant locale when displaying dates.

Patrons can specify the display language for when they are logged in by selecting a language from the Default Language in the My Account Preferences.

Important: If you have selected only a single language, the Default Language drop-down list will not appear in patrons' My Account Preferences.

You must specify one language as the default language for each search profile. The Set Default button is inactive if more than one language is selected in the Selected Languages list or if the language you select is already set as the default. You cannot remove the default language.

Note: If you change the default language for a profile while a patron is searching against that profile, the patron’s current search is unaffected by the language change.
